Residential & Care
St Catherine’s is so much more than a school for our children and young people. The care team are integral to the holistic support approach we adopt.
Deciding to let someone else look after your child can be a difficult decision for parents or carers who are considering boarding for the first time. You want to know that your child will be:
- safe
- happy
- comfortable
- active
- healthy
- enjoying opportunities to practise the skills he or she learns in the classroom.
Each year the quality of our care is assessed by Ofsted. St Catherine's received a "Good with Outstanding aspects" from our latest inspection in October 2011.
Within the Main School the young people live in one of three residential houses on the main school site. Within the Further Education Centre two residential buildings are on site with another house for our more independent learners a short walk away in Ventnor. Each house comprises a combination of single and some double study bedrooms, kitchen, TV lounge, recreational rooms and quiet areas. Each house has its own staff team led by a Head of House.
These trained and experienced teams provide:
- Well planned and balanced social/leisure programme
- Support in managing everyday routines of residential living
- A keyworker system
- Support to keep in touch with home
- Support to learners in out of school hours
- Homework support
- Help with budgeting, pocket money and finances
- Support in developing life and social skills/experiences.
Each learner and his/her Keyworker identify the skills needed to develop their self confidence and independence. Individual Care Action Plans are agreed and the learner and Keyworker then work toward gaining these skills at a pace appropriate for the young person. It is usually the case that one Care Action Plan will be linked with the learner’s Individual Education Plan and the other will focus to developing independence skills.
The care, teaching and therapy teams work together closely to ensure a consistent, coordinated approach for the learner.
