Curriculum
In Key Stages 2 and 3, the learning day is structured to use a classroom base which provides greater continuity and security for learners. This, in turn, assists in developing their confidence in the classroom environment.
Morning lessons focus on literacy and numeracy. Given these key skills underpin all aspects of learning and are integral to personal development, significantly more time is devoted to them. Other National Curriculum subjects are taught by specialist teachers throughout the rest of the day providing a broad programme of study.
Our aim in Key Stage 4 is to prepare learners for the next phase in their life. The uniform is different, the curriculum varies and learners have certain privileges recognising their increasing maturity. Learners follow academic courses which lead to accreditation through Entry Level exams, AQA Unit Awards, ASDAN programmes and GCSE exams. There are strong links with the local high school and Year 11 learners attend the local college one morning a week.
Whilst the main School and Further Education Curriculum are distinct, a number of elements have been developed to create continuity between the two. A key function of this is the vocational programme. Learners start courses at our Vocational Training Unit - The Worx – in Year 10 which allows them to develop work-related and enterprise skills.
Education for 16+ is offered at Grove Hill Further Education Centre. The Centre provides an integrated educational programme incorporating vocational and academic courses, language therapy and independent living skills.
