St Catherine's visits Wates

On Tuesday (5 October) pupils from The Worx at St Catherine’s, which supports children and young people with communication disabilities, visited the new Waitrose site being constructed by the Wates Retail Group.
During the visit, the pupils some of whom are studying GCSE Construction learnt about different aspects of the build such as the length of time the project will take to construct, the importance of health and safety on site and the changes to infrastructure around the site such as the new town square.
The visit was made possible through Wates Giving, a charitable programme run the Wates Family owners of Wates Group, which supports The Worx, the vocational unit at St Catherine’s. With the assistance of the Wates Giving, St Catherine’s has been able to expand The Worx and work with more young people with special needs, increasing their confidence, skills and ultimately their chances of securing further training or employment in the future. The pupils from St Catherine’s have been invited back by Wates Retail to lay a time capsule underneath the new supermarket, which is due to open 4th November.

The Worx is a vital part of our young people’s education providing them with skills and opportunities which will help them to build a brighter future”.

It’s excellent to be able to share the development process with the pupils, bringing to life their studies and leaving a lasting, positive impression with them as well as the community.”
