St Catherine's School

St Catherine’s School is approved by the Department of Education (DofE) as a non-maintained residential special school for the education of learners between the ages of nine and 19 years who have speech, language and communication needs.

This page focuses on our main school (11 to 16 years of age).  For details of our sixth form (16 to 19 years) please refer to our Further Education Centre.

At St Catherine’s we believe the integration of speech and language therapy in the curriculum offers the best learning environment for our children and young people. We provide a modified curriculum based upon the National Curriculum that has been developed specifically for learners with speech, language and communication needs.

In our caring, friendly environment children and young people are given the structure and support necessary for them to learn effectively. Each learner has an individual programme that fits within the specially written schemes of work, allowing individual needs to be catered for within a modified learning environment.

In order to meet the needs of language-impaired learners, St Catherine’s has a policy of maintaining high staff-to-learner ratios that facilitate greater individual attention. Each class has a teacher and a speech and language therapist who work collaboratively to plan programmes and agree targets. Additionally, occupational therapists and learning support assistants work with learners both within the classroom and on a one-to-one basis.
