Vocational Training at St Catherine's
In recent years St Catherine’s has developed its vocational training service in recognition of the increasing need of young people with communication impairments to gain the appropriate experience and opportunities to enable them to consider further learning/training or the right work environment.
In September 2008 we launched The Worx - a comprehensive vocational training project for young people 14 to 19 years of age with communication and other impairments.
The Worx supports around 80 young people during the course of the year. It offers a spectrum of work-training facilities including plumbing, brick laying and construction, computer building, digital photography, music and beauty & personal care. Course modules vary from 6 to 7 weeks for non-accredited training to 2 years for the accredited construction training.
The Worx operates from a commercial building near St Catherine’s centre. Worx participants come from St Catherine’s, special needs units within mainstream schools and other voluntary sector organisations working with individuals with special needs.
The project facilitates partnership working across the third sector and the commercial sector.
The Worx is an evolving project. If you are interested in finding out more about the project and our approach we would be delighted to share our experiences with you.
